How Do You Get to Be a Clown?

Civilians (those who are not clowns) are generally surprised to discover that clowning is an art that must be taught. Some people have natural talent, but even the best clowns had to go to school!

Clown MakeupStudents are taught about the history of clowning and different types of clowns are introduced. Then, everyone gets assistance in choosing their own type of clown and learns how to embellish the character with costume parts and props. A clown wouldn't be a clown without makeup, so that is taught, too. Being a safe clown and interacting with different ages are important skills taught during clown classes.

Waving ClownBut it's not all about looks. Classes provide information on expressions, acting movements, skits and one liners. Simple magic tricks face and cheek painting and balloon art are also presented.

Generally, a broad basic instruction is provided. Most graduating clowns choose certain parts of their skills to expand upon.

The Clown School will provide all students with:
A. Professional clown make-up; initial start up kit
B. One (1) year PAID membership to The Toby The Clown Foundation & Toby’s Clown Alley # 296, w/ID card
C. One (1) year subscription to The Toby Times Newsletter
D. Graduation Certificate after completion of 24 hours of class time and participation in the Student Clown show
